Our Foreign-Born Members, 1920s
This history discusses the Sisters who came from Germany following World War I. Many more Sisters were born outside of the United States, approximately one third of the total community membership. A favorite monastery anecdote recalls how while cleaning, Sister Lioba Deininger, OSB fell from a ladder, breaking an urn in her fall. The horrified house superior said: Sister Lioba, that urn is imported!" Dusting herself off, Sister Lioba responded, "So am I!"
Sister Thecla Franz, OSB papers
This collection includes biographical information, photographs, and limited papers. Included are two passports (one German and one American), nearest of kin infomation, prayer cards, photographs, biographical notes, photocopied news articles, obituaries, correspondence and writings (some in German), and jubilee and funeral materials. Many of these materials detail her involvment in the Altar Bread Department, which closed in 1978.
