Prayer Service, 1984 - 1985
Scope and Contents
This series contains a collection of news stories and correspondence around an advertisement published in the October 7, 1984 issue of the New York Times asking the Catholic heirarchy discussion and differing viewpoints around abortion. Signed by 24 U.S. nuns, and 75 others, this advertisement began a public discourse on Catholic pluralism after The Vatican threatened to expell each nun if they did not retract their names from the statement. A prayer service for the 24 nuns was planned at St. Scholastica Monastery, but was moved to a non-Catholic space.
