Quinn Commission Papal Study of Religious Life in U.S., 1983 - 1986
Scope and Contents
This series contains documents pertaining to the Papal Commission on Religious Life (known as the Quinn Commission), a three-year-long study of religious life in the U.S. helmed by Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco, California. Concerned with the decline of young people entering the Church, and how that trend affects the country's religious community and institutions, Pope John Paul II directed Archbishop John Quinn, along with Archbishop Thomas Kelly of Louisville, Kentucky, and Bishop Raymond Lessard of Savannah, Georgia, to consult religious groups across the country. Much of the series relates to the Archdiocese of Chicago or the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), and their discourse revolving around the commission and its area of study.
