Sister Cecilia was an accomplished author, with peices appearing in many national magazines as well as publishing two books. Many of these works and the materials surrounding their creations are stored within her papers.

Conditions Governing Access

Monastery records are restricted for 50 years after creation. Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.The restricted materials in Sister Cecilia's papers will become open to researchers on June 5, 2027.

Biographical / Historical

Edith Catherine was born May 18, 1892 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to parents John Alexander and Georgia Craig Himebaugh. When Edith was thirteen, following her mother's passing, she was enrolled in the Academy in Canon City. While at the Academy Edith was baptized a Catholic. Edith joined the Benedictine family September 8, 1911. Sister Cecilia made perpetual vows July 11, 1916 and celebrated both golden and diamond jubilees. Most of Sister Cecilia's life was spent working at St. Scholastica high school in Chicago where she served as principal from 1927 to 1932, and retired from the theology department in 1958. Extending her service to youth throughout the Archdiocese, she was a co-organizer with the late Father Martin Carrabine, SJ of CISCA. A writer, of extensive scriptural and liturgical background, Sister Cecilia published two books, "Companion to the Missal" and "The Psalms in Modern Life." Various of her articals on theology and education have appeared in national Catholic magazines. Sister Cecilia passed away June 5, 1977 at the age of 85. Her body was donated to Loyola University Medical School.
