Biographical / Historical

Mother Nepomucene (Mary Teresa) Ludwig was born March 14, 1835 in Wurttemberg, Germany. She joined St. Joseph Convent in St. Marys Pennsylvania on October 7, 1854. Archabbot Boniface Wimmer of St. Vincent Abbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania sent Mother Nepomucene to serve as superior for several early foundations of Benedictine women in the United States. In the obituary, Sr. Vivantic writes: The Benedictine Sisters of Chicago owe much to Mother Nepomucene Ludwig. During the 4 ½ years of her administration from February1862 to October 1866, a novitiate was started, St. Joseph’s Convent and Academy constructed, and the little community put on a firm footing regarding spiritual life and the recitation of the Divine Office. The Sisters taught the girls at St. Joseph Parish School and opened an academy to educate girls and young women.
