The box of personal papers contains materials related to Sr. Johnette Sawyer’s life in community and her pastoral and liturgical work in parishes throughout the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado. These parishes include Sacred Heart– Alamosa, Saint Paul the Apostle – Pueblo West, Saint Leander – Pueblo, Shrine of Saint Therese – Pueblo, the San Juan Community- Monte Vista, Del Norte, Center and Saguache, and Sacred Heart Cathedral-Pueblo. There is some correspondence, including letters from Bishop Charles Buswell of Colorado and Sister’s reports on her life in Colorado. It includes two sets of photographs taken by Sr. Johnette to document the restoration of Sacred Heart Cathedral and the Monte Vista/ Del Norte area to be shared with her Benedictine community in Chicago.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Johnette Sawyer (1935-2020) grew up in Pueblo, Colorado. She entered the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago in 1955 and served as a teacher and administrator at grammar schools in Chicago and Colorado. When the Catholic parish schools in Colorado were closed, Sr. Johnette studied and became engaged in pastoral ministry and liturgical work with parishes in the Pueblo Diocese. She even served as the rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Pueblo during the bishop’s absence. During the last years of her life, Sr. Johnette assisted with liturgy and pastoral care in Saint Joseph Court, the infirmary of Saint Scholastica Monastery in Chicago, Illinois. She died of Covid-19 after an outbreak at the monastery during the 2020 pandemic.
