Biographical / Historical

Sister Baptista (Catherine) Darmstadt was born on December 8th, 1844 in Elmhurst, Illinois. She joined the Chicago community on October 5th, 1866. Sister's perpetual profession was celebrated in 1871 under community prioress Mother Theresa Krug.

Little is known about Sister's life and ministries. The diary of Sister Irmina Zak, OSB notes that Sister served as "head cook" of the community in 1888. Sister Baptista was also missioned to Saint Bede College and Monastery in Peru, Illinois, where the Benedictine sisters were in charge of both kitchen and laundry. She died there at the age of 48 on June 7th, 1893, and is buried in Saint Boniface Cemetery, Chicago.
