Biographical / Historical
Sister Baptista (Catherine) Darmstadt was born on December 8th, 1844 in Elmhurst, Illinois. She joined the Chicago community on October 5th, 1866, and her perpetual profession was celebrated in 1871 under community prioress Mother Theresa Krug. Little is known about her life and ministries, but from the diary of Sister Irmina Zak we know that she served as "head cook" of the community in 1888. Sister Baptista was also missioned to St. Bede College and Monastery in Peru, Illinois, where the Benedictine sisters were in charge of both kitchen and laundry. She died there at the age of 48 on June 7th, 1893, and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago.
