Scope and Contents

This collection contains biographical information and personal papers. Biographical information includes a personal data sheet, a German obituary, a German Parochial Testimony confirming her birth and confirmation, ministry lists, biographical notes, next of kin information, jubilee and funeral materials, photographs, and prayer cards. Also included is an affidavit of support for Sister Lioba (then Anna) to enter the Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, Missouri. Sister worked there on the farm when she first immigrated to the United States, before coming to the Chicago community.

Limited personal papers include archival research correspondence and personal artefacts, such as family prayer cards, lace doilies, and a book on the Saint Walburga Convent.

Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death, until August 7th, 2030. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Lioba Deininger, OSB was born Anna on December 24th, 1900 in Weinberg, Germany. She entered the Abbey of Saint Walburg, Eichstatt, as an aspirant to the American missions on August 15th, 1927. Sister made her first vows on August 16th, 1929, and her final profession on August 16th, 1932.

After coming to Chicago to join the Benedictine community, Sister spent most of her life either at the Saint Scholastica Monastery in Chicago or at Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado. She worked as a housekeeper, baker, kitchen assistant, and in laundry.

Sister was the first to die in the Saint Joseph's Court Infirmary on August 7th, 1980, at 79 years old. She is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Desplaines, Illinois.
