Biographical / Historical
Sister Mary Magdalen Devine, OSB was born Rose Devine in Plymouth, Indiana on April 8th, 1874 to Irish parents. She joined the Benedictine Sisters in Nauvoo, Illinois, on October 22nd, 1904. Sister made her first profession on August 7th, 1906 in Nauvoo, Illinois, and her final vows on July 26th, 1911 in Chicago.
Before transferring her vows to the Chicago Benedictine community in 1910, Sister was appointed charge of the little boys' dining room at the Spalding Institute, a school run by her community. After her transfer, "Mary" was added to her name in religion in order to distinguish her from Sister Magdalene Schmitt. Despite chronic pain from a failed surgery, Sister regularly did the community's Saturday shopping as well as chores throughout the convent.
Sister died on January 19th, 1954 at 70 years old, and is buried in the All Saints Cemetery.
