Scope and Contents

This collection includes basic biographical information and personal papers. Biographical data includes a personal data sheet, nearest of kin information, ministry lists, teaching certifications, a confirmation record photocopy, obituaries, photographs, jubilee and funeral materials, prayer cards, and a diploma from DePaul University.

Personal papers include academic transcripts and grade reports, teaching contracts with the Chicago Archdiocese, and limited correspondence and notes. Also included are American National Red Cross certificates and perpetual membership in the Association of the Miraculous Medal.

Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ambrose Frede, OSB was born Pauline Frede on March 17th, 1909 in Watson, Missouri. The fifth in a family of seven children, she attended various schools in Colorado. Her family belonged to the Sacred Heart Parish in Alamosa, Colorado, where they were introduced to the community through religious education classes and retreats. Sister entered the community on September 1st, 1931 with her natural sister Catherine (Sister Jerome). She made her perpetual profession in 1936.

Sister Ambrose taught at many parochial schools in Illinois, Colorado, and at the Sacred Heart School in Tucson, Arizona. She also taught religious education classes in summer schools across Colorado and in Coolidge, Arizona. She was a member of Bishop Bernard Sheil's Catholic Youth Organization faculty at Saint George School in Colorado. Sister served as a teacher for nearly fifty years before retiring to become a tutor. In community, she assisted in the sewing room.

Sister died on March 11th, 1988, and is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
