Scope and Contents

This collection includes biographical information and limited personal papers. Biographical information includes jubilee and funeral materials, obituaries, a personal data sheet, nearest of kin information, ministry lists, a DePaul University degree, a teaching certification, photographs, and photocopied sacramental and birth records. Her papers include academic transcripts, limited personal correspondence, and ephemera such as prayer cards, postcards, and handmade linen and ribbon bookmarks. Folder 2, containing Sister's photographs, includes pictures sent by Vietnamese Sisters documenting their work in Vietnam in the 1960s.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ruth Gallagher, OSB was born Flora Marie on October 10th, 1908 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Before entering community, she attended both Saint Bernard Parochial School and Cambria Business College, and worked in a business office. She joined the community on September 28th, 1930, making her final vows in 1935.

Sister graduated from DePaul University in 1944. She primarily served as a teacher at Saint Hilary, Queen of All Saints, and Saint Symphorosa Schools in Chicago, teaching courses such as home economics, food and nurtition, child care, nursing, and interior decorating. In community, Sister was the guest mistress and manager of the Priory's food service program. She also spent time making craft articles for the annual fall festival, as well as looking after two Vietnamese sisters while they were studing in the United States.

In her later years, Sister assisted elder relatives in Pennsylvania and Florida. She also served as a companion to home-bound women in the Rogers Park area of Chicago.

Sister Ruth died at the age of 80 on March 3rd, 1989 following a long illness. She is buried in the All Saints Cemetery of Chicago.
