Scope and Contents

This collection consists of biographical information and limited papers. It includes photographs, a personal data sheet, and ministry lists. It also includes community and newspaper obituaries, photocopied news articles, news articles, transcripts, a photocopied commencement ceremony brochure from Saint Scholastica Academy (1911), and notes written by and about her and her work. One highlight is a small note of thanks from the Carmelite sisters at St. Therese Martin's convent, whom she sent a package.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret Mary Gaughan was born Catherine Isabelle on July 1st, 1893 in Poncho, Colorado. She attended the Academy of Saint Scholastica in Canon City, Colorado from the sixth grade onwards, graduating after completing the "teachers' normal course" in 1912. Sister served in public schools around Salida, Colorado for three years before entering the community on August 13th, 1915, making her final profession on August 23rd, 1920.

Sister Margaret graduated from DePaul University with a B.S. in history in 1931, and was an outstanding teacher of history and theology. She was appointed principal of the Academy of Saint Scholastica in Canon City, Colorado in 1933, serving until 1942. Under her leadership and following a rigorous evaluation process, the Academy was awarded a certificate of membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. From 1942 to 1961, she taught at St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago.

Sister died at the age of 73 on December 15th, 1966 and is buried in All Saints Cemetery.
