This collection includes a personal data sheet, photographs, community obituaries, and notes regarding the circumstances of her death. Several of these notes indicate that Sister was initially incorrectly diagnosed and sent home by her doctor despite reporting severe pain, which ultimately contributed to her death shortly after.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Rita Geary, OSB was born Margaret Geary on October 19th, 1862 in Blairsville, Pennsylvania. She entered the community on Spetember 5th, 1886, and made perpetual vows on July 11th, 1891.

Sister Rita was one of the founding members at the Academy in Canon City, a member of the corporation of the Benedictine Sisters of Colorado, the first directoress of St. Mary's School in Aspen, Colorado serving from 1892-1900, and a founding faculty member at the opening of St. Michael's School in Canon City, Colorado.

Sister died on December 21st, 1927 at the age of 65 from cancer. She is buried at the Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City, Colorado.
