Scope and Contents

This collection consists of biographical information and personal papers. Biographical information includes funeral and jubilee materials, photographs, a personal data sheet, obituaries, ministry lists, diplomas, a photocopy of her Irish passport, and nearest of kin lists.

Personal papers include correspondence, a sampling of her artworks, writings, professional contracts, news clippings and certificates, and academic transcripts. Included in her writings are a reflection on a European vacation Sister took, and a brief history of the Arts Building Library.

Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Joyce Gleeson, OSB was born Jalois Catherine Gleeson on November 28th, 1930 in Evanston, Illinois. She entered the community on September 5th, 1948, making her final profession on August 17th, 1953. Sister graduated from St. Scholastica High School Chicago in 1948 and DePaul University in 1961. She continued her education at a variety of institutions, earning Master's degrees from Rosary and Mundelein Colleges, as well as certificates from Chicago City Colleges.

Sister taught at many different Chicago schools including Saint Scholastica High School, Saint Hilary, Saint Symphorosa, and Mother of God Schools. She also taught religious education classes in Colorado, and at Saint Scholastica summer schools. In addition to serving as parish sacristan, she worked as a children's librarian for the Austin-Irving Branch of Chicago Public Libraries, and as a librarian for the Saint Scholastica Academies, the Monastery, and Saint Symphorosa School. As a librarian, she was involved in modernizing libraries for the "computer age."

After retiring, Sister accompanied elders on various outings, as well as travelling and attending gatherings nationally and internationally with her natural sister. She also volunteered at Saint Francis Hospital. Sister was a dual American and Irish citizen.

She died on November 10th, 2009 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.
