Scope and Contents

This collection consists of biographical information and personal papers such as a personal data sheet, photocopied documents providing evidence of ministries, nearest of kin information, and an academic transcript from Saint Scholastica High School. It also includes photographs, an archival research letter, community and newspaper obituaries, prayer cards, and a scapular with the message, "Stop! the Heart of Jesus is with me."

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie Rose Gorman, OSB was born Susan Loretto in Chicago, Illinois on November 6th, 1886 to Irish immigrant parents. Sister first entered the community on June 3rd, 1926, before leaving on account of illness. She rejoined on January 3rd, 1927, making her perpetual profession at St. Joseph Convent in Salida, Colorado on January 12th, 1932.

Sister attended Saint Scholastica High School Chicago before serving as a teacher in several schools across Colorado, including Saint Michael School in Canon City, Saint Leander in Pueblo, and Saint Joseph in Salida. She also taught at Saint Scholastica High School in Chicago as a study prefect and religion teacher, despite suffering from arthritis.

The Gorman family gifted the community the auditorium altar.

Sister died on October 4th, 1962 at the age of 76, and is buried in the All Saints Cemetery in Desplaines, Illinois.
