Biographical / Historical

Sister Benigna Graff, OSB was born Maria in Pueblo, Colorado on January 23rd, 1887 to German parents. Maria joined the community at the age of 16 on October 28th, 1903 and made her perpetual vows in Canon City on August 6th, 1908.

Sister developed "galloping consumption," an aggressive form of tuberculosis, and was nursed by her mother at the convent in Canon City. She died on on March 9th, 1910 at the age of 23 and is buried in Canon's Lakeside Cemetery.

Mother Imelda, OSB, who may have trained Sister Benigna in teaching, wrote a 1934 article in "Our Community" about Sister's brother Ludwig Graff, who was paralyzed and in constant pain.
