Scope and Contents

This collection consists of personal papers and biographical information. Biographical information includes photographs, nearest of kin, ministry lists, degrees, teacher certifications, a personal data sheet, a Latin Baptismal certificate, community obituaries and memorials, jubilee materials, and prayer cards. Personal papers include personal correspondence, family materials such as a family history, school transcripts, and materials related to the research and publication of "Where There Was Need," a community history written by Sister.

Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Genevieve Harrison, OSB was born Eloise on October 18th, in Cave Springs, Georgia to a Protestant family. Following the death of her mother, Sister's father put Eloise and her siblings into the care of a friend living in Canon City, Colorado. Her father died shortly after this, and the friend became the children's guardian. Eloise was sent to school at St. Scholastica Academy in Canon City, and was baptised Catholic her junior year in 1914. Sister entered the community on September 1st, 1917, causing her guardian to cut off all contact between them. She made her perpetual vows in 1922.

Sister Genevieve earned a Bachelor's of Education from DePaul University in 1926 and an MA in 1929. She also attended and earned certificates from Loyola University, the Lewis Institute of Chicago, St. Joseph's College in Collegeville, Indiana, Mt. St. Scholastica College in Canon City, Loretta Heights in Denver, and the University of Colorado. Sister served for most of her life as a teacher of theology, literature, history, and home economics at Saint Scholastica High School Chicago and St. Scholastica Academy. She also researched and wrote a history of the community from 1861-1965 entitled, "Where There Was Need."

Sister died of Parkinson's disease at the age of 83 on March 25th, 1980. She is buried in the All Saints Cemetery.
