Biographical / Historical

Sister Francis Marie Harwas, OSB was born Mary Josephine (Mary Jo) on October 31st, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. She entered the community on August 31st, 1952, making her final profession on August 16th, 1957.

Sister graduated from St. Scholastica High School Chicago in 1952, before attending St. Procopius and Mundelein Colleges. She earned a Master's of Education in 1971 from Loyola University whilst serving as a teacher. Sister taught in various schools across Chicago, including St. Josephs, Queen of All Saints, St. Hilary's, and St. Symphorosa. She also taught at St. Mary's in Pueblo, Colorado, and served as principal at Sacred Heart High School, St. Joseph's, and St. Raymond's.

Sister was a member of the Executive Board of the Archdiocesan Principals' Association, as well as the School Study Commission for "Directions for the Future: The Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago." She was also active in the parish, serving in the Adult Catechumate, the Parish Council, Home Liturgies, and the Inter-Parish Commission.

Sister left the community on January 4th, 1975.
