Biographical / Historical

Sister Alcuin Hogan, OSB was born Margaret Mary on Spetember 24th, 1889 in Independence, Missouri. After the death of her mother, she was enrolled in St. Scholastica Academy, Canon City. Sister graduated in 1906, entering the community on June 27th, 1907. She made her final vows on January 6th, 1912.

Sister attended DePaul University, Loyola, the College of the Sacred Heart in Denver, and Colorado State Teachers' College, before serving primarily as a teacher at Saint Scholastica High School Chicago and Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado. She taught many different classes such as theology, Latin, Spanish, and mathematics. Sister also taught religious vacation classes in Alamosa, Colorado, at summer schoools run by the Catholic Youth Oraganization of Chicago, and at weekend classes in Rockdale, Illinois. During the Great Depression, she was appointed Superior of the school in Canon City. There she managed not only to pay off all overdue bills, but to build a bank balance. In community, Sister was responsible for writing the "Catechist's Corner" column, published monthly in "Our Community" newsletter.

In 1951, Sister travelled to Europe for the Jubilee Holy Year celebrations. She recieved permission to transfer to the Holme Eden Abbey in Carlisle, England during this trip for a trial period. However, Sister suffered too much in the British cold, and so planned to join a fledgling community in New Mexico. This plan never materialized, and she returned to Chicago. She observed her golden jubilee in Chicago in 1962, before eventually returning permanently to Holme Eden Abbey.

Sister died at the age of 79 on April 2nd, 1968, and is buried in Carlisle, United Kingdom. Sister Judith Murphy visited her grave and Holme Eden Abbey in 1974.
