Biographical / Historical
Sister Frances Hrica, OSB was born Anna on February 5th, 1887 in Lozorna, Czechoslovakia, a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire (also Slovakia, Hungary). Sister's family was expelled from Austria, all of their belongings and properties confiscated, following the death of the son of Emperor Franz Joseph. Due to this, her family began to slowly emigrate to the United States. Sister was introduced to the community upon visiting her brother, Edward Hriza, who worked in maintenance at the Academy of Saint Scholastica in Canon City. Although Sister did not have a dowry, she met with the prioress and was accepted to join the community on February 25th, 1908. She made her first vows on July 12th, 1909, and her final profession on July 26th, 1912.
Sister served the community in many ways, primarily by working in the kitchens of both Chicago and Canon City. Her two nieces, Sisters Ada and Gemma Rico, followed her into the community. She became a naturalised citizen of the United States in 1924.
Sister Frances died on February 21st, 1961 and is buried in All Saints Cemetery.
