Scope and Contents

The papers of Sister Arnoldine Schwarz, OSB consist of personal data, academic records, personal correspondence, needlework samples and patterns. There are samplers of a type of lacemaking called tatting and of Swedish embroidery on cotton huck towels.

Conditions Governing Access

Monastery records are restricted for 50 years after creation. Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

In this collection, the restricted materials are related to education and correspondence, in folders 1 and 2. The rest of the material in the collection is unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Arnoldine Schwarz, OSB was born in Chicago in 1896, one of the six children of Joseph and Anna Buscher Schwarz. Two of her brothers became priests, Father Augustine Schwarz, OFM spent a great part of his life serving Indiginous people in Arizona; Father Arnold Schwarz, OFM spent time with Indiginous communities in Minnesota and some years at Corpus Christi Parish in Chicago ministering to an influx of Black Catholics following the flight of Whites. She was educated at St. Augustine Parish School, St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago, and DePaul University. In her ministry, Sr. Arnoldine taught in elementary schools, usually at the intermediate level, was in charge of the children's choir, assisted in Religious Vacation schools in Colorado, and taught crafts to the girls enrolled in Camp San Benito, CaƱon City, Colorado. Sister Arnoldine inherited her family's artistic abilities. A maternal grandfather was responsible for much of the wood carving at Holy Family Church, Chicago. Her aunt, Sister Amelia Buscher, OSB was a loved and respected piano and art teacher. Sister Arnoldine was also skilled in embroidery, lace-making, and leatherwork.
