Biographical / Historical

Sister Anastasia Kieckhoefer, OSB was born Margaret on April 16, 1844 in Brooklyn, New York. Born to a German father and an American mother, Sister was one of seventeen children. She joined the community as a choir sister on June 16th, 1882, making her first vows in Latin on February 10th, 1885. Sister made her final profession on July 27th, 1888.

Sister Anastasia served as a teacher, first assigned to Saint Gertrude Academy in 1886 in Breckenridge, Colorado. Later, she also taught at the Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, and was the directress of Immaculate Conception School in Kankakee, Illinois. In addition to teaching, Sister was the organist in the Saint Mary Parish Church, and taught piano at SS Benedict and Scholastica Academy in Chicago. In community, Sister was the secretary to the Board of Managers of the Benedictine Sisters of Colorado.

Sister died at the age of 72 on April 28th, 1916, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Illinois.
