Biographical / Historical
Sister Thecla Kowalska, OSB was born Rosa on April 26th, 1842 in Danzig, Prussia (now Poland). Along with her natural sister, Sister Walburga, Sister entered the community on July 18th, 1881. She was invested on August 15th, 1881, making her first profession on August 16th, 1882 in Latin. She made her final profession on August 15th, 1910, which was handwritten in German.
Little is known about Sister's life in religion. Both she and her natural sister were artists in needlework and painting, but were limited in their ability to work due to arthritis. A fragment of a humeral veil entitled, "Boniface Wimmer Jubilee Embroidery," is attributed either to Sister Thecla or Sister Walburga.
Sister Thecla died at the SS Benedict and Scholastica Convent on Orleans Street on May 7th, 1918. She is buried in Calvary, Cemetery.
