Biographical / Historical
Sister Walburga Kowalska, OSB was born Marie on October 12th, 1844 in Danzig, Prussia (now Poland). Sister joined the community along with her natural sister, Sister Thecla, on July 18th, 1881. She was invested on August 15th, 1881, making her first vows on August 16th, 1882. She made her final vows on August 15th, 1885.
Sister Walburga served as the procurator to the community, managing financial affairs, as well as in artistic needlework and painting. An ornately embroidered humeral veil entitled "Boniface Wimmer Jubilee Embroidery," (T.24) is thought to be the work of either Sister Walburg or Sister Thecla.
Sister Walburga died on April 20th, 1908 at the age of 64. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.
