Mother Theresa Krug, OSB papers
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of biographical information and personal papers. Biographical information includes one hanging file of basic information and documents such as a personal data sheet, community obituaries and biographies, photographs of Mother Theresa, photocopied vow documents, a prayer card from her Golden Jubilee in Italy, and more.
Personal papers consist primarily of research about Mother Theresa and her brother Archabbot Boniface Krug, providing a variety of different perspectives, recollections, and personal accounts of Mother Theresa's life. For example, the series, "Biographical research and archival correspondence," includes such documents as a biography of Mother Theresa written by Mother Imelda Fischer, an account of the mission in Canon City, Colorado, by Sister Regina, describing Mother Theresa's plans in 1900 to start a novitiate there, an archival inquiry by Mother's ancestor in Germany, and the testimonies by Sister Vincent Siegert, Mother Laura, and Sister Marie of the Saint Jospeh Convent in St Mary's, Pennsylvania about why Mother Theresa chose to leave for Italy. The series, "Visit to the Abbey of Monte Cassino" records Sister Marilyn's trip to the Italian Monastery, in which she inquired about Mother's time there as abbess as well as her death and burial.
Other series in this collection include photographs, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to Mother's friends and relations, such as her brother Archabbot Boniface Krug, the artist Eliza Allen Starr, two proteges, and Reverend Father Dom Mauro Inguanez, whom she asked to return her ring for her to the Chicago community following her death. Only one series, "Letters, writings, and annotated prayer cards," contains a small selection of photocopies of documents written or autographed by Mother Theresa. Some of these documents are accompanied by later translations.

Biographical / Historical
Mother Theresa Krug, OSB was born Barbara on October 5th, 1844 in Baltimore, Maryland to a German family. She entered the Chicago community on August 2nd, 1862 at the age of 18. Mother made her triennial vows on January 6th, 1864, and her perpetual profession on February 10th, 1867.
Mother Theresa was appointed prioress of the community in 1868, holding the position for three years. After the end of her appointed term, she was elected by the community, becoming the first elected prioress.
In 1871, the community's home at Saint Joseph Convent was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. Under Mother Theresa's leadership, land was purchased for a new convent and school, which was renamed SS Benedict and Scholastica Convent and Academy. Elected for three consecutive three-year terms, Mother Theresa also oversaw the foundation of the Saint Scholastica Convent and School in Nauvoo, Illinois, and the community's adoption of the parish school Saint Joseph in Warsaw, Illinois.
Mother Theresa resigned as prioress in 1877, but was later reelected in 1888. Under her second terms as Prioress, the community further expanded their works to Saint John Nepomucene School in Chicago, Saint Mary School in Aspen, Colorado, Saint Wenceslaus School in Spillville, Iowa, and Saint Mary, Help of Christians School, in Pueblo, Colorado. Mother resigned again in 1902, leaving with her natural brother, Archabbot Boniface Krug, OSB to visit the monastery of Saint Scholastica in Monte Cassino, Italy.
However, Mother Theresa Krug never returned to Chicago, instead transferring her vows to the Monte Cassino community where she was elected abbess. Mother Theresa died there on October 28th, 1917, and is buried in the chapel of the Cassino Cemetery in Italy.
