Biographical / Historical

In Chicago, the community purchased property in Rogers Park in 1895 and at the wishes of Archbishop James Edward Quigley, Mother Suitbert Vollmer, OSB encouraged the community to build a new convent and school on the High Ridge (now Ridge Boulevard) property where classes opened for resident and day students in 1907. In 1925, a large addition which the community called The Greater Saint Scholastica was opened just south and attached to the original building. The new school building included the Saint Scholastica Chapel at the heart of the monastery school complex. In 1958, the Fine Arts wing was opened. It included offices, classrooms, art and music studios, a library, and two theater spaces. The school was an early adopter of modular scheduling in the 1970s, allowing for more flexibility and better use of space during the years of highest student enrollment. In 1996, Saint Scholastica became an International Baccalaureate School, adopting the IB curriculum for many of its students. The school closed in 2012 but the rising class of seniors continued to meet on the 3rd floor of The Greater Saint Scholastica, allowing them to graduate in 2013.
