Biographical / Historical
This collection contains information about Saint Wenceslaus School Spillville, Iowa compiled by Sister Vivian Ivantic, OSB. The school and Church were built by Czech settlers that immigrated from Bohemia to the northeast corner of Iowa to form a small Czech village that reminded them of their homeland.
The school opened in 1870 and the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago taught at Saint Wenceslaus School from 1895 to 1898. Sister Irmina Zak, OSB was born in Stankov, Bohemia in 1869 and joined the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago in 1888. She spent most of her life teaching in parish schools for children of Bohemian or Slovak descent. She taught at the school from 1895 until 1898. Sister Adelsinde Brummer, OSB was born in Pfaffenhofen, Bavaria in 1872 and joined the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago in 1889 and accompanied Sister Irmina to Spillville.
Spillville was the home of Reverend Procopius Neuzil, OSB the third abbot of Saint Procopius Abbey, Lisle, Illinois and his sister, Sister Ludmila Neuzil, OSB.
