Scope and Contents

This collection includes Sister Barbra Mallinger's community papers, photographs, and collection of prayer and holy cards as well as her work on the dresses worn by the Jesus Infant of Prague.

Conditions Governing Access

Monastery records are restricted for 50 years after creation. Sisters' papers are restricted for 50 years after the Sister's death. Photographs, previously published, and widely distributed materials are unrestricted.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Barbra Mallinger was born September 8, 1913 to Frank and Elizabeth Kafka Mallinger in Josefalva, Austria-Hungary. The family came to America when Barbra was a few months old and lived in various startes before settling in Chicago at St. Paul's Parish. Barabra took on the role of breadwinner for her family after her father's death in 1918 upon completing elemanty school and two years of training in business school.

Barbra joined the community January 5, 1937. She recieved her Habit and took the name Sister Elizabeth the following july, making her perpetual vows August 18, 1941. SHe reassumed her baptismal name in the 1970's. She spent most of her time working in the business office, but also worked in the reception office, helped in the kitchen, and assisted in the infirmary. She spent a few years in Canon City and the rest of the time was at the Priory. She was known for her delightful sense of humor.

Sister Barabra died September 6, 1984. She was buried on her favorite deast, the Nativity of Mary, September 8th and is buried in the All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
