Scope and Contents

This collection includes a personal data sheet, academic transcripts, professional credentials, ministry lists, obituaries, jubilee prayer cards, biographical notes, photographs, and limited correspondence. Also included is a class schedule from 1937, potentially from the teaching program that Sister Sebastian conducted at Saint Scholastica Academy, and a photocopy of the title pages of an edition of The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott, which Sister won as a prize for her skill in composition.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Sebastian Cronin, OSB was born Mary Josephine in Leadville, Colorado on March 19th, 1885. She entered the Benedictine community on October 13th, 1909. She professed temporary vows on January 6th, 1911 and final vows on January 6th, 1914. Sister celebrated her silver jubilee in 1936, her golden jubilee 1961, and her diamond jubilee in 1971.

Sister Sebastian served as principal of Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado from 1921-1933 and 1943-1950. She was also principal of Saint Scholastica High School in Chicago from 1933-1942. With Sister Dorothy Pursell, Sister conducted a two-year Normal School course of at the Canon City Academy, which prepared graduates for teaching.

Sister Sebastian died on February 2, 1971 at the age of 85, and is buried in All Saints Cemetery. Sister Cornelia Cronin, OSB was her natural sister.
