Biographical / Historical
Sister Joanna (Grace) Cunningham, OSB was born on May 31, 1909 in Patton, Pennsylvania. She entered the Benedictine Sisters in January, 1930 approximately 18 months after her older sister (Sister Benita) entered the community. Sister Joanna professed temporary vows on August 16, 1931, and final vows on August 16, 1934. Sister Joanna continued higher education at Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas. She began teaching at St. Hilary School in Chicago, and briefly taught at St. Leander School in Pueblo, Colorado. She also assisted in the Home Economics Department at the motherhouse. A serious heart condition cut short her ministry. Sister Joanna died on December 9, 1943 at the age of 34. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
