Biographical / Historical
Sister Clara Daleiden, OSB was born Susanna on October 16, 1840 in Wallendorf, Trier (Germany). She came to the United States in 1856, and entered the Benedictine Sisters in November of 1868. Sister professed temporary vows in 1869 and final vows in March, 1873. She celebrated her silver jubilee in March, 1898.
Part of Sister Clara's life was spent at Saint Bede Monastery and College in Peru, Illinois. With a group of sisters she cared for the kitchen and the laundry. Sister Clara was the half-sister of John P. Daleiden, founder of the well-known religious goods store in Chicago. Sister Clara suffered a great deal physically; she died on January 12, 1914 at the age of 73. She is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.
