Biographical / Historical
Sister Callista Blake, OSB was born in Nauvoo, Illinois on October 12, 1864. She entered the Benedictine Sisters in February, 1891. She professed final vows in July, 1896. She celebrated her silver jubilee in July, 1921. She was assigned to teach at St. Benedict/St. Scholastica Academy on Orleans Street, then was appointed directress of St. Scholastica High School on Ridge Boulevard. Sister Callista's principal work was done at the Academy of St. Scholastica in Canon City, Colorado. As directress she re-organized the curriculum so that young women graduated with an excellent academic background. She was loved by both sisters and students. She was so revered that for many years her name was not given to another sister. Sister Callista suffered from constant ill health. She died at the early age of 58 on June 11, 1923. She is buried in Canon City's Lakeside Cemetery.
