Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell", c. 1861-1936
Scope and Contents
This item is a bound tan journal in Mother Antonia's German cursive handwriting with questions and answers in black and red ink. It is titled "Schiller's Wilhelm Tell, Fragen und Antworten [Questions and Answers]...St. Scholastica's Academie Chicago, Ill." The play "Wilhelm Tell" or in English, William Tell, was written and published by Friedrich Schiller in 1804. It tells the story of a Swiss national folk hero who fights for Swiss independence against a tyrannical and oppressive ruler. Mother Antonia may have taught the play to her students at St. Scholastica Academy Chicago, and used this journal as notes for the class. Included with this text is a "Compact German Grammar" booklet that may also have been used to teach German at St. Scholastica. However, the Grammar is dated 1936, and was therefore published after Mother's death.
