Scope and Contents

This collection begins with thye report cards of Sr. Mary Ann O'Ryan, OSB, from her time at St. Symphorosa School and contains material from her education as well as from schools where she worked as principal and teacher. There are letters she wrote to her family when she first entered the community just as Vatican II was being held in Rome, and her writings on Catholicc women in history she wrote while pursuing her doctoral studies at Loyola University. Sr. Mary Ann O'Ryan, OSB, also studied monastic history through the American Benedictine Academy and on her own. The materials she used to teach monastic history to Sisters in initial formation and to lay people in the Elderhostel program at St. Scholastica Academy in Cañon City are also included.

Biographical / Historical

Sr. Mary Ann O'Ryan, OSB, was born in Chicago in 1942. She was the oldest of eleven children and first met the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago as a child in St. Symphorosa Parish. She recieved the name Veronica when she became a novice at St. Scholastica Monastery in 1960 and served as Prioress 1982-1986. In addition to positions in community leadership, her main life's work was in education as a teacher and administrator in Catholic schools, elementary through university level. At the time of her unexpected death, October 5, 2020, she was serving as the community Treasurer.
