Biographical / Historical

In 1874, the pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Nauvoo, Illinois Reverend Henry J. Reimhold with approval from Bishop Foley, established a high school for girls. Mother Teresa Krug, O.S.B., Superior of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica sent five members who arrived in Nauvoo, Illinois on October 15, 1874.

On November 2, 1874, Saint Scholastica Academy opened. The Sisters were members of Saint Scholastica Convent in Chicago, and were appointed by the Superior there.

On September 29, 1879, following discussions and negotiations between the Benedictine Sisters of Nauvoo and the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago and Bishop J. L. Spaulding of Peoria, the Nauvoo Community was declared independent of the Convent of Saint Scholastica of Chicago.

At that time, the name was changed to Saint Mary's Academy and Convent. At the end of the school year in 1997 Saint Mary's Academy closed. In 2001 the community moved to Rock Island, Illinois where they had built a new monastery.
