Scope and Contents

This collection contains basic biographical information and personal papers. Biographical information includes a personal data sheet, various biographical notes, photographs of Sister and her birthplace, funeral materials, jubilee and funeral mass cards, obituaries, contact information of next of kin, ministry lists, and photocopies of birth and baptismal certificates.

Personal papers include personal and professional correspondence and academic transcripts. Also included are materials on Colorado's history, such as Sister Edna Cooper's account of the home economics cottage at Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado, and various Colorado news clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Edna Cooper, OSB was born Edna Amelia in Canon City, Colorado on October 2nd, 1904. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. Sister Edna attended Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City beginning in the 4th grade. She graduated in 1923, and became a Catholic in 1924. Sister Edna entered the Benedictine community on October 9th, 1927. She was invested on July 11th, 1928, recieving the name in religion Sister Claudia. She made her first temporary vows on August 16th, 1929, and her final profession on August 16th, 1932. She celebrated her silver jubilee in August 1954 and her golden jubilee in June, 1979. After Vatican II, Sister reclaimed her baptismal name, becoming Sister Edna.

The majority of Sister's religious life was spent at Saint Scholastica High School in Chicago and at Saint Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado. She served as a librarian and managed the switchboard. Sister Edna was an avid stamp collector, selling stamps to contribute to community needs. As a historian, she had a gift for dates and details, especially regarding Colorado history.

Sister died on April 6, 1985 at the age of 80 years old. She is buried at All Saints Cemetery.
