This series details the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago's brief presence in Chandler, Colorado. Four Sisters ran a vaction school in the small coal town during the summer of 1940, which served children in Chandler, along with Williamsburg, Colorado, and Coal Creek, Colorado. Also included is an Archives Newsletter written following a 1991 archive trip Sr. Vivian Ivantic, OSB, and Sr. Eleanore Hillenbrand, OSB, took to Colorado.
Coal Creek, Colo., 1933 - 1955
This sub-series is comprised of a couple papers listing the Sisters who ran summer schools of religion in Coal Creek, Colorado, along with the years they worked. The 28 students who attended the 1933 vacation school taught by Sr. Leona Schmitt, OSB, appear in two photographs. Also included is "The Gleanor," an article from an unnamed publication on the coal mines surrounding Cañon City, Colorado, which includes a description of Coal Creek prior to a 1907 fire that wrecked the town.
Pueblo, Colo., 1959
This sub-series is mostly comprised of papers listing Sisters who taught vacation schools in Pueblo, Colorado. The only other material included is a 1959 news clipping mentioning Sr. Walburg Matern, OSB.
Rocky Ford, Colo., 1937 - 1942
This sub-series contains an archives note listing the Sisters who taught vacation schools in Rocky Ford, Colorado, along with a couple news clippings of events relating to the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago's presence in the town. Also included is a photograph of several pupils from one summer, although the year is unknown, and it appears they do not comprise the whole class, as there are more children cut off on the right left side of the frame.
