Biographical / Historical

The Benedictine Sisters of Chicago served in Catholic vacation schools in Illinois, Arizona, and most of all, Colorado. From the 1920s through the 1980s. The Sisters provided the children in various counties with religious education, preparation for sacraments, and academic support. Most often, the summer schools of religion were held in areas without a Catholic school. Sometimes, the towns shared a priest with several other towns or were a mission of a church in another town. From 1988 to 1991, Sr. Vivian Ivantic, OSB, made several trips out to Colorado to gather information about the vacation schools. Sr. Eleanore Hillenbrand, OSB accompanied her as photographer while Sr. Jeanne Hegarty, OSB, and Sr. Amy Campbell, OSB, served as local guides to their Sister researchers from Chicago.
