Biographical / Historical

Sister Alma (Mary) Zakel was born November 23, 1888 to Anton and Margaret Strancar Zakel in Krank, Slovenia. She entered St. Mary's Parish in Pueblo on January 5, 1917, was invested with Benedictine Habit July 11, 1917, and made perpetual vows July 11, 1921. Sister Alma served as a housekeeper at the convents attached to the parochial schools in Illinois and Colorado; as a sacristan at St. George Church, Chicago; and making coifs in Canon City. In addition to her community responsibilities, Sister Alma was a prominent lace maker, particularly known for her battenberg laces, many of which have been displayed. She was also a skilled card player and an avid collector of canceled postage stamps, which she sold, using the proceeds to fund a new elevator at the Monastery.

Sister Alma suffered a stroke and, after a partially successful recovery, died during Holy Week on March 20, 1964, fulfilling her desire to be an 'Easter lily for the Lord.' She was 75 years old and is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Il.
