Biographical / Historical

Sister Ottilia Hoeveler, OSB was born Mary Amelia Clara on May 21, 1844 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She entered religious life and was invested with the name Sister Adelaide on December 8, 1863 at the Convent of Saint Scholastica in Newark, New Jersey. Sister Ottilia left Newark before her final vows and joined the Annunciation Convent in Nebraska City. She made her final vows there on May 25, 1868. When the Annunciation Convent later disbanded, she joined the Chicago community. There she was given the name Sister Ottilia, as there was already a Sister Adelaide in the Chicago community.

During the Chicago Fire, Sister carried a statue of the Blessed Mother in order to save it. Shortly after, Sister Ottilia became a directress of an academy at Johnstown, Pennsylvania until she rejoined the Chicago Community and was sent to Saint Scholastica Academy in Nauvoo, Illinois. When the Saint Scholastica Academy in Nauvoo, Illinois became independent, it's named changed to Saint Mary. Sister Ottilia became the new community's first prioress, until poor health forced her to resign in 1913. She died on April 23, 1915.
