Biographical / Historical
Sister Alma Zakel was known for her use of wood bobbins to make battenberg laces. She used the technique to make medallions, handkercheifs, doilies, and altar laces.
Crafting and lacemaking have been an important facet of Benedictine Sisters' lives. Young women out of the St.
Scholastica schools were expected to learn certain skills, including sewing. Sewing could be basic garment hemming and button adornment or "fancy", like embroidery and lace making. Sisters who had learned these skills often left their works to the Archives for preservation.
