Scope and Contents

The bulk of this collection consists of magazine articles, dedicated issues, and memorial books about the Kennedy family and their intersection with American politics in the 1960s. There is a 3-page letter from Sister Barbara McCarry, OSB to her Benedictine Sisters in the Fall of 1960 outlining JFK's platform to encourage their participation in the upcoming election. Biographical / Historical

John F. Kennedy, an Irish-American, was the first Catholic to be elected President of the United States. Catholic Americans revered him and his family; they believed his election signified the acceptance of Catholics and an end to their discrimination in the United States. His wife, Jacqueline (Jackie) was a role model for young women and mothers of all faiths. His younger brother Robert (Bobby) became a hero in the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s.
