Biographical / Historical
Sister Barbara McCarry (1939-2022) was the daughter of Irish immigrants who raised her and her brother and sisters in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, a center of local politics. As a Benedictine Sister, she taught elementary school, high school social studies, and theology. She became an administrator in both Catholic and public schools in Chicago, specializing in curriculum development. She also taught at National Louis University. Prior to renewal, her religious name was Sister Mary Justin, OSB and she continued to celebrate her name day on the Feast of Saint Justin even after resuming the use of her baptismal name.
