Biographical / Historical

Sister Vivian Ivantic, OSB, as archivist of the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago organized several research trips to Colorado in an effort to document the history of the community in that state. On these trips, she was accompanied by her assistant, Sister Eleanore Hillenbrand, OSB, who generally served as the photographer. Treasurer Sister Mary Frances Schermerhorn accompanied her for one trip. Colorado natives, Sister Amy Campbell, OSB and Sister Jeanne Hegarty, OSB served as drivers and local guides.

Afterwards, in addition to publishing articles on her research in the Archives Newsletter, Sister Vivian Ivantic, OSB added her research results to collections related to the Summer Schools of Religion and Colorado parishes, and also created these nine scrapbook type albums to record the travelers' experiences and findings. These scrapbooks document the archival research trip of June 12th to July 3rd, 1989.

Appraisal

As she transferred the album contents to archival boxes, Sister Virginia Jung, OSB chose to leave the album contents in tact even when some material is duplicated in the archives, or when some material was taken from other places in the archives, or already published by an external source. This way, each album continues to present Sister Vivian Ivantic, OSB and Sister Eleanore Hillenbrand, OSB view of their research trip, tells the story of the place as Sister Vivian collected and contributed to it, and it puts a stop to dismanteling collections to create something new.

Processing Information

In 2024, the Sister Virginia Jung, OSB rehoused the pages of each vinyl binder in an archival box binder for preservation. In the process, she transfered a few photographs from sticky plastic sleeves to new sleeves, preserving original order. She created a cover sheet for each album that records all annotations from the spines, covers, and inside covers of the original vinyl binders. These cover sheets are found at the beginning of each binder box.
