Collection of St. Scholastica Monastery holy cards

 Collection — Box: OSBCHI-F-1
Identifier: OSBCHI-F-100

Scope and Contents

The holy cards represent Benedictine Saints as well as other saints. Some holy cards represent exerpts from the Rule of Saint Benedict or other Catholic themes. They often have artwork on one side and a prayer on the back, accomodating different prayer styles. Holy cards are also printed for a Sister's jubilee or funeral and distributed at those celebrations. Holy cards of individual Sisters are in their files, but samples may appear in this collection. These funeral mass holy cards usually have the relevant dates on them. Catholics use these cards as devotional items as they pray, often using them as bookmarks or on a prayer altar. The collection includes several series sacramentals which are Sacramentals, on the other hand, “are sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments. They signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church. By them, men [sic] are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are rendered holy” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1667). These sacramentals are a series of Sacred Heart Badges and a series of Agnus Dei cards and pouches containing wax blessed by the Pope.
